No Worries Holidays: Ensuring Accessible Travel for Seniors in Belgium

Télé-Secours – Vacances stands out as a pioneering initiative in Silver Tourism, offering tailored holidays for elderly individuals, particularly those aged 80 and above. This innovative programme, recognised during the research phase of good practices in the In-Sit project, addresses the unique challenges faced by seniors with health or mobility issues. By providing accessible and worry-free travel options, Télé-Secours allows elderly individuals to continue exploring the world and forming meaningful social connections in a safe and supportive environment.
The core of this initiative revolves around holidays that cater to the specific needs of seniors over 80 years old. These trips, both within Belgium and abroad, are carefully organised to ensure that each participant feels comfortable and cared for, regardless of their physical limitations. Destinations are chosen for their accessibility, and specialised services, such as healthcare assistance, mobility aid, and even dialysis, can be arranged at the location. Additionally, participants are equipped with a safety button, allowing them to call for assistance at any time, ensuring peace of mind throughout their stay.
The holidays offer a range of experiences, from relaxing stays by the Belgian coast to international trips to places like Greece and Malta. For those looking for more than relaxation, themed trips are available, such as the “Numeric Stay,” where participants can learn new skills. The diversity of destinations and themes ensures that every senior can find a holiday that meets their interests, physical abilities, and health requirements.
What makes Télé-Secours particularly unique is its comprehensive approach to supporting seniors. From door-to-door transportation to on-site medical care, every detail is meticulously planned to ensure that participants can enjoy their holidays without worry. A volunteer guide accompanies the group on each trip, providing personal assistance and ensuring that everyone is well cared for. This dedication to individualised care not only guarantees safety but also fosters a sense of belonging among participants.
Since 2009, Télé-Secours has successfully organised three international trips and ten local holidays each year, with a maximum of 16 participants per group to ensure personalised attention. The programme’s success is reflected in the positive feedback from seniors, many of whom express their gratitude for the opportunity to travel and socialise despite their age or health conditions. One participant remarked, “If only my children knew that here I walk, swim, and play cards with other people… At home, I don’t even go down to the village any more.”
While the initiative has been highly successful, it also faces certain challenges. Finding suitable, accessible locations for seniors aged 80+ can be difficult, and the costs of organising these trips can be high, especially when private rooms are required for comfort. Despite these challenges, Télé-Secours continues to thrive, offering seniors a unique opportunity to enjoy travel experiences that are typically out of reach for their age group.
Télé-Secours – Vacances serves as an inspiring example of how accessible tourism can be implemented for seniors with specific health and mobility needs. Supported by the French Community Commission, this practice demonstrates that with careful planning and a commitment to inclusivity, elderly individuals can continue to enjoy rich and fulfilling travel experiences well into their later years.
